Retired NYPD officer says cops used Taser on his teenage son

AP | September 17, 2007

A retired city police officer has accused members of the department he once worked for of beating his teenage son, including zapping him with a stun gun and putting him in an illegal choke hold.

Retired Lt. Alexander Lombard said on Sunday that his son, Alexander, 17, was at a barbecue in August when police showed up and arrested him using brute force. He said he wants the police department to investigate what happened.

"He's truly dismayed by the whole thing," Lombard said of his son. "He grew up with cops. He was raised to trust cops."

Police said officers arrested the teen on a charge of disorderly conduct while responding to a call of a large disturbance in Harlem.

"In the course of subduing the suspect, a police sergeant employed a Taser against the suspect's ankle," said police spokesman Paul Browne, in a statement. "The sergeant documented the use of the Taser as required."

The teenager refused medical attention, was issued a summons and released, Browne said.

Noel Leader, co-founder of the advocacy group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, also called for an investigation.

Given that there was no resisting arrest charge against the teenager and no criminal possession of a weapons charge, Leader said it was evident to him that the "incident did not justify use of a stun gun."
